These feeble and wounded men, unfit for field duty, but not entirely disabled, instead of being discharged, will be organized into detachments.
Welcome to the home page of Company H, 21ST Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps. This Regiment was formed, to preserve the memory and outstanding achievement of the men that served in the Veteran Reserve Corps. Behind the front lines, the men of the reserve corps, even though they were partially physically disabled, they still managed to serve their country as aides, clerks, hospital attendants, guards, provost, nurses, cooks and many other extra duties. Over 60,000 men and officers served in the Veteran Reserve Corps after their service in the Regular Army. 1,664 died while a member of the service, 24 in actions, the remainder died of disease and wounds suffered in regular service. We represent Company H, 21ST Regiment which was organized in Newark, New Jersey on July 25, 1863. On May 13, 1864, the units’ designation was renamed the 17TH Company, 2ND Battalion. The regiment was mustered out by detachments August 3, 1865 to October 22, 1866. Through battle recreations, living history encampments and presentations, it is our pleasure to educate the public with the history of the Veteran Reserve Corps.
